What is a virtual mobile operator?
Vol. 1 No. 1 (2022)A virtual wireless network operator, virtual mobile operator or OMV (in English, Mobile Virtual Network Operator, abbreviated MVNO) is a mobile phone company that does not have a frequency spectrum concession, and therefore does not have its own radio network. . To provide service, you must resort to the network coverage of another company (or companies) with its own network (a Mobile Network Operator, or OMR) with whom you must sign an agreement.
MVNOs exist as a commercial figure in a large number of European countries —with Spain, the United Kingdom and the Scandinavian countries standing out in terms of the number and age of existing MVNOs—,1 Canada, the United States, Australia, Chile, Colombia and Mexico . In principle, they can operate in any of the existing mobile telephony technologies, such as GSM, UMTS or CDMA2000, given that their existence is linked to a commercial rather than a technological factor.
